It’s been years since I’ve sniffed the original Yves Saint Laurent Opium, a well-known and loved spicy-oriental complex perfume. Black Opium is nothing like the original, which may dissatisfy lovers of the original, or be a positive change. Once I read Black Opium’s notes, I was fairly certain I’d like the scent. I’m a gourmand lover, and adore sweet fragrances.
top notes: pink pepper, orange blossom, pear
middle notes: coffee, jasmine
base notes: vanilla, patchouli, cedar
YSL Black Opium is said to be a rock n roll take on the classic opium, and evoke a darker side of YSL. If you love the original, and are hoping for a different “version” of classic Opium, this is not it. It’s a much different fragrance. The mini bottle I have is textured with black sparkle, and makes a great addition to my collection. I love mini bottles, and actually don’t have many.
I adore the sweetness of pear in perfume, and wish it was a more commonly utilized note. It adds such a lush fruitiness that I love! The best way I can describe YSL Black Opium when it’s first applied, is a juicy, bright and sweet scent. Thankfully the orange blossom doesn’t turn powdery, and take over the fragrance. The pink pepper adds a hint of sparkle to the overall feel of the scent.
As it dries down, Black Opium doesn’t go through any major changes. It morphs a bit into a soft, sultry sweet scent. It’s very well blended, and to be honest the coffee and patchouli don’t jump out and fight for attention. The jasmine adds a nice sweetness and gives the fragrance some longevity. To me, it smells like night blooming jasmine, which I adore.
I found others liked this scent when I had it on. I get about 5-6 hours of longevity before feeling the need to reapply.
